What was AOIMSG?

AOIMSG (Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group) was the successor to the UAP Task Force, established by Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks on November 23, 2021. Its mission was to detect, identify, and attribute objects of interest in Special Use Airspace, with AOIMEXEC as its oversight council under the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security.

The AOIMSG Establishment Briefing Card (FOIA release 22-F-0381), covering November 23 and December 9, 2021 OSD Public Affairs briefings, is the primary document. AARO's 2024 Historical Record Report also covers AOIMSG in the Section IV program catalog.

What replaced AOIMSG?

AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) replaced AOIMSG, established on July 15, 2022, and shifted the mission from airborne objects only to anomalous phenomena across all domains: air, sea, space, and trans-medium environments.
