In March 1952, the U.S. Air Force launched Project Blue Book, the longest-running official government UFO investigation, which collected and analyzed 12,618 reports over 17 years before being terminated on December 17, 1969, with 701 cases permanently classified as unidentified.

Project Blue Book had two mandated goals: determine whether UFOs posed a national security threat and analyze UAP data scientifically. The Air Force closed the program after the Condon Committee concluded further study was not scientifically warranted, a conclusion later criticized for being predetermined.
