Between 1982 and 1986, more than 5,000 residents of New York's Hudson Valley and Fairfield County, Connecticut, reported observing a massive, silent, boomerang-shaped craft carrying bright multicolored lights; J. Allen Hynek co-authored an investigation published as 'Night Siege' (1987), and law enforcement officers submitted independent reports.
Witnesses described an object the size of a football field that hovered at low altitude without noise. Pilots who attempted to recreate the sightings with light aircraft in formation were unable to replicate the described behavior on radar. The New York Times covered the sightings contemporaneously, quoting police and aviation professionals.
