GEIPAN Case 1997-05-01661 — MEILLERAYE DE BRETAGNE (44) 1997
French gendarmerie procès-verbal (PV 00203/97) documenting a GEIPAN Category-D case from 3 May 1997 in which two civilian witnesses in Meilleraye-de-Bretagne, Loire-Atlantique, observed a round orange-amber luminous object travel north-to-south over their housing estate at night, with no conventional explanation determined.
Brief
On 3 May 1997 at approximately 01:30, a couple returning home to a housing estate in Meilleraye-de-Bretagne observed a round, intense orange-amber luminous mass approach from the north, overfly their property at an estimated altitude of 100 metres, and disappear to the south. Both witnesses independently noted that when a car drove past, the object's light dimmed and an interior brighter structure — described variously as two lights or an oval form — became momentarily visible. The gendarmerie investigation found no engine noise, no turbulence, no odour, no blinking navigation lights, and no similar reports from the surrounding area; the local mayor formally attested to the witnesses' credibility. GEIPAN assigned the case Classification D, indicating the phenomenon could not be identified.

Key points
- Incident date: 3 May 1997, approximately 01:30. Reported to gendarmerie on 13 May 1997; case formally closed 4 June 1997.p.1
- Object described as a round luminous mass, orange-amber (ambré) color, emitting intense light that stood out clearly from the surrounding stars.p.2
- Estimated altitude: approximately 100 metres above the houses of the housing estate.p.2
- Trajectory: arrived from the north, overflew the estate, and disappeared to the south at rapid speed.p.1
- When a car passed on the nearby road, the object's luminosity dimmed; both witnesses independently reported seeing a brighter interior structure at that moment — Mme M. described two lights, Mr M. described an oval.p.5
- No engine noise detected; only a faint air-displacement sound noted on passage. No turbulence, no odour, no red or green blinking navigation lights.p.2
- Object's luminosity was reportedly uniform from all viewing angles (front, side, rear), inconsistent with conventional aircraft lighting.p.6
- The mayor of the commune formally attested to the witnesses' credibility within the official gendarmerie record.p.2
- Investigation formally inconclusive: exact nature and origin of the phenomenon could not be determined.p.3
- No similar phenomena were reported in the surrounding area during the same period.p.2
Verbatim

Most interesting
- Both witnesses independently reported — without apparent coordination — that the object's light dimmed at the precise moment a car drove past, and that an interior structure briefly became visible at that moment.
- The two witnesses described the interior structure slightly differently: Mme M. saw 'deux lumières plus claires,' while Mr M. saw an 'ovale plus claire' — consistent descriptions of the same feature from two separate vantage points.
- The object's luminosity was reportedly identical when viewed from the front, the side, and the rear, a characteristic incompatible with all known conventional aircraft and most natural aerial phenomena.
- Mr B. M. estimated the object's size, based on its observed altitude and angular extent, to be comparable to the wingspan of a light tourist aircraft.
- The witnesses did not photograph the object, a fact the gendarmerie formally noted in the administrative record.
- GEIPAN's Category D is the agency's highest-uncertainty classification, reserved for cases in which all conventional explanations have been considered and none can account for the reported observations.
- The observation lasted approximately five minutes, long enough for both witnesses to reposition themselves multiple times to maintain visual contact as the object transited north to south.
