On July 20, 2022, the Department of Defense formally established the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) under Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, designating it as the authoritative DoD office for UAP investigation across air, sea, space, and land domains.
Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, former chief scientist at the DIA's Missile and Space Intelligence Center, was named AARO's first director. AARO assumed responsibilities from the UAP Task Force and the newly created AOIMSG. Jon Kosloski succeeded Kirkpatrick as director in August 2024 after Kirkpatrick's December 2023 departure.
